Cheerleaders: The Dark Side of the American Dream
In the United States, in basketball as in American football, there is no game without a cheerleader! Every weekend, in packed stadiums, they entertain tens of millions of Americans with their hot bodies, sexy outfits, and playful choreography. A highly anticipated performance that also encourages the teams on the pitch. Across the country, cheerleaders are an institution in their own right.
Many American personalities have been in their youth, such as Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock and even Meryl Streep. Symbol of sport and student culture, the discipline is practiced in most universities. In more than a century of existence, it has evolved a lot. More than a dance, it has become an acrobatic show in its own right, practiced by five million athletes, women but now also men. A discipline that has its competitions overseas called “cheerleading”. The most prestigious is organized in the spring in Daytona Beach (Florida). An opportunity for pom-pom girls (or cheerleaders) from remote regions to shine on the national stage.
The small University of Bethany, Oklahoma, is hoping to win the title in its category, counting on its star player Camaryn, 25 years. To recruit the best cheerleaders in the country, universities offer scholarships, turning the discipline into a social elevator. For lower-class or minority youth, it is sometimes the only hope to integrate prestigious universities in a country where higher education is expensive. If the image of cheerleaders still makes young American girls dream, behind the glitter hides a darker side.
In recent years, the discipline has been affected by numerous sexual abuse and harassment scandals. In Dallas (Texas), the twins filed a complaint against their former coach. Faced with these revelations, and the image of a woman object transmitted by the discipline, some cheerleaders have traded their ultra-sexy outfits for jogging, like Sammy, at the NBA club in Cleveland.
