The Hidden Epidemic: Understanding and Treating Female Hemorrhoids

[손기정 일중한의원 원장] Chronic cystitis, interstitial cystitis, and overactive bladder are hidden diseases that afflict women. This is because they suffer alone for a long time without being able to tell anyone.

Among these invisible and difficult diseases, there is hemorrhoids. These days, the increasing number and concerns of female hemorrhoids patients are unusual. According to statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service two years ago, women accounted for about half of a total of 630,000 patients receiving treatment for hemorrhoids in Korea.

Lack of exercise and diet are considered to be the main causes of hemorrhoids in women. If you are inactive, sit for a long time, and get less exercise, your immunity and intestinal function will decrease, which will interfere with your bowel movements.

Ki-jeong Son, director of Japan-China Oriental Medicine Clinic, explains that the anal sphincter becomes loose and the surrounding blood vessels become saggy, preventing blood circulation, which can easily lead to hemorrhoids. When intestinal function declines and immunity decreases, urinary diseases such as cystitis are likely to recur.

Women especially increase their risk of hemorrhoids as they begin to lose weight rigorously. During dieting, meal volume, stool volume, and intestinal motility decrease, causing stool to stay in the body for a long time. If a lot of water is reabsorbed in the large intestine and the stool becomes hard, it can cause injury to the anus during defecation, which can easily lead to hemorrhoids. It is known that constipation increases the risk of hemorrhoids by as much as four times, and is also related to the recent increase in hemorrhoids cases among young women in their 20s and 30s.

Another factor is that women’s skin is delicate. Hemorrhoids refers to fissures, fistulas, and hemorrhoids that occur in the anus. Hemorrhoids are a symptom of tearing of the anal mucosa due to constipation or severe and repeated diarrhea. Because the anal mucosa of women is thinner and weaker than that of men, they characteristically have more fissures. Additionally, female hormones secreted during pregnancy delay bowel movement and cause blood vessels to expand around the anus, which can cause hemorrhoids. In particular, the pressure around the anus increases due to the increase in abdominal pressure caused by blood flow and the weight of the fetus, so the likelihood of developing hemorrhoids increases as childbirth approaches, but it usually subsides after delivery.

Hemorrhoids are usually caused by problems with the blood vessels in the anus. In addition, both men and women are often accompanied by anal symptoms such as hemorrhoids and fissures (wounds and blood), as well as internal problems such as decreased function of the stomach and large intestine. In oriental medicine, this is seen as a disease that causes redness, swelling, itchiness, constipation, and pain due to moisture, heat, wind, and moisture around the anus. This should not be misunderstood as a cleanliness issue or hidden or neglected due to the sensitivity of the affected area. However, unfortunately, the reality is that the biggest obstacle to treating female hemorrhoids is shame. There is a high preference for symptomatic treatments such as drugs and sitz baths, but fundamental treatment is difficult, and surgery, which is the last resort, can cause pain and discomfort, as well as anal damage, narrowing, and recurrence of symptoms.

There is a way to cure these hemorrhoids without surgery. Traditional oriental medicine’s hemorrhoids treatment is a combination treatment that focuses on the large intestine to improve digestion and defecation functions, and to relieve blood circulation and congestion so that the anus and surrounding tissues can function properly. A representative example is a treatment that uses a combination of beef stew, beef chives, and applied beef chives. Various medicinal herbs are used, such as Astragalus, which heals wounds and expels pus, Goehwa, which reduces anal swelling and reduces fever, Daegyegeun, which helps relieve inflammation and relieve blood stagnation, and Jingyo, Jiyu, and Angelica root. It effectively helps relieve the pain of hemorrhoids and prevent recurrence without surgery.

Hemorrhoids patients of both sexes who are reluctant to have surgery, especially female hemorrhoids caused by diet and constipation, pregnant women suffering from hemorrhoids after pregnancy and childbirth, cancer patients, and people with chronic diseases can also be easily treated while living their daily lives.

Even if there is no usual bleeding or pain, bleeding after a bowel movement or itching or discomfort around the anus can be considered early symptoms of hemorrhoids. It is better not to neglect it and to actively seek treatment.
