[OSEN=김예솔 기자] Jo Se-ho talked about his shopping addiction.
On tvN’s ‘You Quiz on the Block’, which aired on the 24th, psychiatry professor Shin Young-cheol, an authority on gambling addiction treatment, appeared and told various stories about gambling addiction.
Yoo Jae-seok asked, “Is it true that there are 2.37 million people addicted to gambling?” Professor Shin Young-cheol drew attention by saying, “In the past, it was difficult to access gambling, but these days, all you need is a smartphone. It is a natural result that the number of addicts is increasing.”
Professor Shin Young-cheol talked about why gambling addiction is more scary than other addictions. Professor Shin Young-cheol said, “Gambling addiction, shopping addiction, gaming addiction, these are behavioral addictions.” In response, Jo Se-ho surprised those around him by saying, “Honestly, I think I have a shopping addiction.”
Professor Shin Young-cheol drew attention by saying, “Gambling can go up indefinitely. It is not just a problem alone, it also drags family members, neighbors, and cousins into it. It can be a more terrifying disease than other addictions.”
Yoo Jae-seok asked, “They say gambling addiction is caused by dopamine.” Professor Shin Young-cheol said, “Dopamine is secreted in the brain, and dopamine makes us feel pleasure and happiness. When we do something, we feel good. Then, we repeat that action. That’s how we become addicted.”
Professor Shin Young-cheol said, “If you respond to a large stimulus, you will not respond to a small stimulus.” Professor Shin Young-cheol continued, “There is a person I know who earned 500 million won in a week through gambling. That is the beginning of misfortune. How can you be satisfied if you earn 300 won at work? When you start gambling like that, you end up wasting all your money.” It caught my attention.
Professor Shin Young-cheol attracted attention by saying that an addiction specialist must be tenacious. Professor Shin Young-cheol said, “Relapse can be a part of the process of addiction treatment. When you relapse, you are told to clap. The moment you realize relapse, you must realize your helplessness.”
Jo Se-ho said, “I quit smoking for about four years, but now I occasionally smoke e-cigarettes. I quit for four years, but I feel guilty.” In response, Professor Shin Young-cheol drew attention by advising, “Why do you blame yourself? Instead of focusing on doing it again, you should focus on the process of overcoming it.”
Jo Se-ho talked about his problem with shopping addiction. Jo Se-ho said, “I happily paid for this, thinking that I was someone who could afford it, and brought it home and didn’t wear it. I think I was addicted to shopping at the time.” In response, Professor Shin Young-cheol said, “This can be dangerous,” and advised, “Once you actually buy it, it loses its meaning. It is more depressing and lonely than the problem of shopping addiction, and it is not fun to do anything else, so you have to look inside.”
