One serving of tobacco that is used to make hookah contains about 25 grams of tobacco, which is equivalent to smoking about three packs of cigarettes, says Alexandra Zhukovskaya, doctor of preventive medicine at the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Pervomaisky District of Minsk:

— Despite the fact that the smoke of a smoking mixture for a hookah is driven through a flask with water, it does not lose its insidious properties – in this sense, water is not a filter that can trap hazardous substances, but a large number of lovers of “oriental chill” are convinced of the opposite.

Hookah smoking cannot be considered a safe alternative to conventional cigarette smoking. Hookah is a significant risk factor for chronic lung and cardiovascular diseases, cancerous tumors and causes nicotine addiction.

While smoking a hookah, a large amount of carcinogenic resins is formed, which, when strongly tightened, settle on the pharynx, then the trachea and large bronchi. Compared to regular cigarette smokers, hookah smokers are more at risk of developing upper respiratory tract cancer.

Since hookah smoking is traditionally a group process, the sharing of a hookah mouthpiece by several smokers increases the risk of contracting herpes, tuberculosis and other respiratory infections.
