The food most sold on the beaches in Romania can cause serious health problems for consumers. The Association for Consumer Protection warns about the consequences of consuming the most sold food product on Romanian beaches. It is sold in all the resorts, on all the beaches, in industrial quantities, under the condescending eyes of the authorities, without the sellers complying with any public health rules.
A food eaten on the beach, in poor conditions, can cause great health problems. No vacation at the Black Sea is charming without this food. Tourists consume it anywhere, on the beach, on the cliff, even in the hotel room. The Association for the Protection of Consumers from Romania draws attention to the boiled corn consumed on the beaches on the coast. There is no tourist, on vacation at the Black Sea, who does not buy it from street vendors, who haunt the beaches or the seafront. They do not have a marketing authorization, nor do they comply with any public health rules.
They place their pots from which they sell directly on the sand and sell directly to amateurs, after which they move on. Everything happens under the indulgent eyes of the authorities, but also of consumers who are not really interested in what they buy and, above all, what they eat.
Under these conditions, APC representatives draw attention to the risks to which those who consume boiled corn bought from ambulances on the beach are exposed. In a public message, they ask, rhetorically, how it is possible for a mother, otherwise very demanding, not to think about how the corn she gives her child was prepared, to eat it.
“A 4-year-old child, while playing in the sand with one hand, occasionally takes a bite of a boiled corn in his other hand, which his mother paid 10 lei to a street vendor on the beach ! Under what conditions was that corn cooked, the child’s mother did not ask! What risks that child was subjected to, his mother has no way of knowing!”, says the message sent by the APC.
The food that makes you sick on the beach
According to the quoted source, peddling on the beach is prohibited by law, but this does not prevent the corn sellers from plying their trade. ANPC draws the attention of the police that they should take care of sanctioning those who violate these regulations.
“Itinerant trade on the beach is prohibited (see article 8, paragraph 1, letter l), in conjunction with paragraph 2, letter c) of GEO no. 19/2006 regarding the use of the Black Sea beach and the control of the activities carried out on the beach)! The employees of Mr. Marian-Cătălin Predoiu, the Minister of Internal Affairs, are in charge of complying with this!”, the message also states.
APC shows that most cases of food poisoning are favored by higher temperatures that favor the multiplication of pathogens.
“Most cases of food poisoning occur in the warm season, when high temperatures favor the multiplication of pathogens. In order to reduce the risk of illness, proper hygiene of hands, kitchen utensils and food is necessary, as well as proper food storage”, the representatives of the Romanian Consumer Protection Association also specified.
Rights of beachgoers
Tourists who go to the beach in Black Sea resorts should know that they enjoy a number of rights established by law. Any beach operator has an obligation to respect them and to ensure decent conditions to all who use their services.
The Pro Consumers Association presented a series of rights enjoyed by tourists who go to the beach on the Romanian Coast. Beach operators are obliged to provide tourists with the following:
– a surface of 5 square meters for the beach on the deckchair;
– an area of 3.24 square meters for the beach on the sheet;
– group sanitary;
– shower;
– space for changing clothes;
– a distance of at least 5 m from the water line to the first row of sunbeds/sheets;
– clean water in the bathing area, without objects that could hurt you, without vegetation;
– clean beach, without shells, snails and other objects that could hurt you;
– bins for household waste.
