The Hidden Clues: How Your Fingers Can Indicate Serious Diseases

[Voice of Hope August 17, 2023](Editor: Li Wenhan) Most people may care about whether their fingers are slender and whether their nails are neat, clean and shiny, but they don’t know that fingers sometimes indicate some serious diseases.

According to reports, a woman in Guangdong found that her fingers and toes were getting thicker and thicker, but she didn’t pay attention at first. I met a doctor by chance and advised her to go for an examination as soon as possible, but it turned out that there was a 4 cm tumor in her lung.

Finger clubbing refers to the painless hyperplasia, swelling, and hypertrophy of the soft tissue at the end of the finger, especially the soft tissue on the back, under certain pathological conditions, resulting in deformation of the distal finger. It is named for its resemblance to clubbing.

Finger clubbing may be caused by acquired causes or genetic lesions. However, its production mechanism is still unclear, and it is generally believed to be related to chronic hypoxia, metabolic disorders and toxic damage at the extremities.

The relatively common one is that due to hypoxia in the fingertip tissue, some vasoactive substances cause the opening of the arteriovenous branch of the local microcirculation, the blood flow increases, and the tissue hyperplasia is promoted.

Finger clubbing is intrinsically related to certain diseases, and is often an early manifestation of some diseases, especially as the first or accompanying symptom of lung cancer. It has been reported in the literature that the incidence of clubbing in lung cancer is about 1.6% to 9.4%.

If you smoke for a long time + bone and joint pain + clubbing, you must go to the hospital to check for lung cancer.

But does clubbing equate to lung cancer? it’s not true. Finger clubbing can also be a sign of the following three groups of disorders:

1. Respiratory diseases (75%~80%): a series of diseases in the respiratory system mainly bronchiectasis, such as chronic pulmonary abscess, severe bronchiectasis, chronic empyema, fibrous cavitary tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cystic fibrosis of the lung. Intrapulmonary shunts may also cause clubbing.

2. Cardiovascular diseases (10%~15%): a series of diseases in the cardiovascular system, mainly cyanotic heart disease, including congenital heart disease, subacute infective endocarditis, pulmonary arteriovenous fistula, chronic Pulmonary heart disease and aneurysm etc.

3. Digestive system diseases (5%~10%): a series of diseases in the digestive system mainly chronic ulcerative colitis, such as chronic ulcerative colitis, liver cirrhosis, Crohn’s disease and intestinal tuberculosis.

The basal angle formed by the skin on the back of the distal end of the finger and the nail is called the supraungual angle. The supranail angle of a normal finger is ≤160°, and if the angle is ≥180°, it is called clubbing.

Doctors suggest that simple clubbing can go to the dermatology department and orthopedics department for treatment.

Those with primary diseases can see a doctor according to the primary disease, or those with symptoms can choose the corresponding department to see a doctor according to the accompanying symptoms, such as: cardiovascular medicine, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology or oncology.
