DARMSTADT – It can start again, but with restrictions: After almost two months of closure, the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt will open its doors to the public again on Tuesday, May 12th. According to the guidelines of the authorities, hygiene and protective measures in the Corona crisis stipulate that a maximum of 120 visitors may be in the house at the same time. Some departments remain closed, planned exhibitions have to be postponed or canceled.

The “Kraftwerk Block Beuys” show runs until May 24, but should be extended if possible. A maximum of 20 visitors have access to this area at the same time. A maximum of 40 visitors are allowed in the Beuys block, the Spierer collection and the Karl Freund gallery. Such a restriction also applies to zoology. The visitor paths are prepared as a tour, critical areas such as junctions and doorknobs should be disinfected every hour. In the main building, handicrafts and costumes in the “Laaxer clasp” and the Pre- and Early History department must remain closed for organizational reasons, as must the font, typesetting and printing process branch on Kirschenallee.

Visitors must keep a distance of 1.50 meters and wear a mouth-nose guard, which can also be purchased at the cash desk. Media and audio guides will not be handed over, it says in the house’s announcement. The museum shop is open, supervised by the Darmstadt team. An official decision to open the museum café is still pending.

The anniversary program for the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the State Museum is affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. The exhibition “Rembrandt Competition. A princely contest “is canceled, since too many visitors are expected here, it is said on request. The show “25 Years of Unesco World Heritage – Messel Pit” should be on view from August 18. The presentation “Carte Blanche for Tomás Saraceno” will be postponed to the period from September 25, 2020 to January 31, 2021.

The return of the loan from Peale’s Mastodon from the USA to Darmstadt is delayed, because the skeleton is now to be seen in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington by January 3, 2021. Therefore, the reunion will only be celebrated with the exhibition “American Heiner. A mammoth makes history ”.
