The Hepatitis A Outbreak in Prykarpattya, Vinnytsia, and the Potential Risk for Kyiv

Prykarpattya

In the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital there are 7 people – four adults and three children.

“The children are six or seven years old. There are some in grades 5-6. All patients from Ivano-Frankivsk. Their condition is moderate. There are no heavy ones. There are patients who were hospitalized on October 31 and November 1,” told deputy. General Director of the medical institution Natalya Demina.

At the same time, according to her, since the beginning of 2023, 12 people in the region have had hepatitis, including one child. They were recorded in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Bogorodchany, Dolinsky and Nadvirnyany communities.

As noted today in the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Medical Administration, people with hepatitis A are being hospitalized 8 peopleamong them are 3 children, their condition is of moderate severity.

“People started getting sick in mid-October. All the above-mentioned cases are isolated and no connection has been established between them yet. Therefore, we are not talking about an outbreak. The situation is under control,” – noted the head of OVA Svetlana Onyshchuk.

Vinnytsia region

In Vinnitsa hospitalized 111 people with a confirmed diagnosis of hepatitis A, among them 22 children. 15 cases were confirmed over the past 24 hours.

How told Deputy Director of the Department of Health and Rehabilitation of the OVA Tatyana Bondarenko, another 6 patients are under control and are awaiting confirmation of the diagnosis. The first outbreak of hepatitis A in the region was registered on October 16.

Cases of hepatitis A have now been reported in five districts of Vinnytsia region. In particular, in Mogilev-Podolsky, Khmilnyk, Kalinovka, Gaisin and Kazyatyn. A state of emergency has been declared in the region due to the outbreak of this disease.

We would like to add that the Ministry of Health reported an outbreak of hepatitis A in Vinnitsa on October 24. Even then, it was known that 60 people fell ill and were hospitalized, including 14 children. Later, the number of patients began to increase.

There is a risk for Kyiv too

We must understand that Kyiv is also at risk. The point is how explained Director of the Department of Health of the Kyiv City State Administration Valentina Ginzburg, it is associated with population migration between the Kyiv and Vinnytsia regions. And since the source of infection is a sick person who secretes the pathogen, Kyiv is in a potential danger zone.

Therefore, as the director added, you should go to the hospital at the first symptoms, without waiting for the “yellow” reflection in the mirror.

“Wasted time not only harms your health, but also increases the risk of a disease outbreak and puts others at risk: your children, relatives, colleagues and complete strangers,” she emphasized.

Hepatitis A. What kind of disease?

Infection with this disease occurs through contact with contaminated things and food products (dishes, linens, towels, toys, etc.) used by the patient. As trivial as it may seem, the main method of preventing hepatitis A is thorough hand washing. The pathogen attacks the liver.

Let us note that in 2019, an outbreak of hepatitis A was recorded in the Kirovograd region. Then the outbreak was registered in one of the villages of the Novoarkhangelsk region. Then three people fell ill.
