The Heartbreaking Demise of Historic Trees in Graz for the Construction of a New Center of Physics

“I don’t want to die yet! Let me live!” it said on notes taped to their bark. A last rescue attempt for the approximately 130 to 150 year old maple-leaved plane trees in Harrachgasse in front of the Graz pre-clinic, whose trunk was up to five meters in circumference. Facts were created in the early hours of Sunday morning: despite protests, the trees have now been felled. The felling was necessary for the construction of the new Center of Physics, for which the entire pre-clinic will be demolished in September. A total of 25 – mostly much younger – trees in Harrachgasse, Attemsgasse and Goethestrasse gave way.
