The Heart of Colombia: A Musical Tribute to Colombian Culture in Quindío

A musical titled The Heart of Colombia is the gift that the department of Quindío offers to the country and to visitors who come to this destination in search of getting closer to Colombian culture.

The show, which will feature 26 artists on stage – all Quindians – will have its premiere on October 19. At the front was the actress and singer Lorena U (who for years was a voice in the show Delirio, Cali’s flagship) and promoter of the reality show that recruited the talents.

Together with the governor of Quindío, Roberto Jaramillo, the artist explained – at a press conference in Bogotá – how the show that seeks to become an icon of Quindío was created and what it will be like.

“The show is a tribute to the history of Colombian music,” explained Lorena U. We look from 1500, with the arrival of the conquistadors, to today, with stars like Karol G, Carlos Vives or Juanes. I was concerned about the footprint of Colombian music in the world. So it is a tribute to those artists who have done their bit so that the country is seen with different eyes.”

The cast was selected from a call, which was filmed and turned into a reality show that will be seen in 2024 on Telecafé. At the helm was producer John Aceves.

The production turned into reality

“It was a beautiful job, because of its social focus,” added Lorena U. The best gift we can give is The heart of Colombia.”

Governor Jaramillo highlighted that it is important that “the second destination in the country has this offer. We have national, organic tourism, of the coffee landscape, family tourism. But this staging, which is presented twice a month, can be a new way of showing Quindío. It is a legacy that remains.”

The show, which lasts one hour and 20 minutes, premieres at the Armenia Convention Center and includes songs from the Colombian repertoire (such as Colombia, Tierra Querida and Rebelión).

“I asked myself how they were going to do this: from 1,500 to Karol G. That was the challenge,” the governor highlighted. Furthermore, without losing sight of the fact that since it was a show made in Quindío, it had to highlight its own. That’s why there is the famous dance of the macheteros. “He is neither from Antioquia nor from the coffee zone, he is from Quindío,” said the governor. And that’s why they dedicated themselves to looking for teachers who would help take this tradition and bring it to a more contemporary form.

Lorena U gave another example: “Popular music, very strong in the Coffee Region, had two important exponents: Darío Gómez and Gildardo Montoya. They were the pioneers, when Juanes made The Black Shirt, he was inspired by Montoya. He made a fusion of rock with brandy music. We took those references for the musical.”
