The Health Commissioner resigned this Friday

Health Commissioner Dr Ashwin Vasan will be stepping down as the city’s chief health officer on Friday, October 18, a few months earlier than expected.

Last month, Vasan said his last day would be “early January 2025,” without giving an exact date.

“As I noted in the first announcement of my retirement, it is time to prioritize the needs of my family, despite the love of this job, the effort this and this group,” Vasan said in a statement on Tuesday. “These needs have become more urgent, so I have decided to postpone the date of my departure to Friday this, October 18.

Dr. Michelle Morse will serve as interim health commissioner while the city conducts a national search for Vasan’s permanent replacement, Mayor Eric Adams said in his own statement Tuesday.

“While we are saddened by his passing, we deeply respect his decision to prioritize the needs of his family and the urgency of those needs,” Adams said.

Morse was named the city’s chief medical officer in early 2021. She also serves as deputy commissioner of the health department’s Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness.
