The Healing Power of Sound: How Sound Therapy and Sonopuncture are Revolutionizing Holistic Health – 20 Minutes

In the range of therapies that do good, sound occupies a special place. And this has been happening since the 17th century, when the physicist and founder of Western musical acoustics, Joseph Sauveur, defined C and its 256 Hz frequency as the basic tone of scientific reference. “So the use of tuning forks in the medical field has existed for as long as in music,” says Clémence Lahaye, sophrologist and sound relaxation specialist, in Wambrechies, near Lille, in the North.

“Even today, the do 256 Hz remains used, as well as the 128 Hz, by certain doctors, but also physiotherapists, osteopaths, orthopedic doctors and even neurologists,” she explains. Objective: relax thanks to sound vibrations.

A derivative of acupuncture

It’s been a year and a few months since the young woman, herself a singer and musician, opened her practice where she offers three types of sound relaxation: sound massages, sound journeys and sonopuncture, a derivative of acupuncture where the tuning fork replaces the needle. 20 Minutes tested these three types of complementary therapies “intended for people who no longer know what to do with their emotions”, specifies Clémence Lahaye.

First of all, we were lucky. Tibetan, of course! Its particularity: when you rub it, it vibrates. With a different sound depending on its size: the bigger it is, the more serious it is. And the mix of sounds from these Tibetan bowls provides very special sensations: a bit like your phone starting to vibrate in your pocket while you pass by a working jackhammer. All the kept proportions.

“Numerous studies have been carried out around the world on the power of vibrations and sound on the DNA and cells of human, animal and plant life,” says the sophrologist. We also know the impact of sound on water, but our body is made up of 60% water. The action of the sound is likened to deep massages of the organs and the body.”

And bingo, it hits the mark! The vibrations of the bowl on the stomach activate the feeling of relaxation, so you can let yourself go. According to Clémence Lahaye, vibrations also propagate through the bones. “This is why treatment is not recommended in the event of a fracture,” she says.

“The brain is directly affected”

Same with the tuning forks stuck on certain points of the body. “It doesn’t have the same precision as acupuncture, but the principle is the same,” notes Clémence Lahaye. This technique appeared in 1950 with Doctor Jean Lamy who called this stimulation of acupuncture points phonophoresis. » Here again, absolute relaxation. Note that, as is often the case for treatments that physically act on the body, having a pacemaker, being epileptic or pregnant is a contraindication.

And what happens in the ear? “Thanks to binaural sounds, that is to say two different frequencies on each ear, the brain is directly reached, without effort,” says Clémence Lahaye. This is notably the principle of his “sound journeys”. “Some people have physical pain that is incompatible with therapy using Tibetan bowls or tuning forks, so I offer them this type of relaxation. »

The sound journey is necessarily less impressive in terms of direct feeling. But the letting go it provides helps manage stress and improve mental health. “Zen, let’s be zen!” ”, as the song said.
