The Healing Experience: Overcoming Fear and Embracing the Unexpected in Childbirth

Caesarean section or not

But suddenly she realizes that she will also have to give birth to this child. “I thought about the risks and my previous experience with childbirth. Everyone did everything right at the time and yet things went completely wrong. I called three hospitals to ask how they would handle my situation. I chose the hospital where they said there was a good chance that it would be a caesarean section, but that they would look at everything with me step by step.”

The pregnancy is going well. The examinations and growth ultrasounds do not reveal anything striking. “But I didn’t trust anything anymore. That’s why I had good conversations with the doctor, hired a doula and went to haptotherapy. I discovered how much tension I was experiencing. Everything came out and I just cried. I don’t know how the haptotherapist managed it, but I was able to relax again for the first time.”

Breathing under control

The gynecologist also hits the right note. “The gynecologist would try to be at my birth and if she couldn’t be there herself, she would catch up with her colleague. She gave me the recognition I needed.”

A few days later her waters break at night. “My baby was no longer safe and was shaking all over my body. I was so afraid the baby would get sick. I was given antibiotics as a preventive measure, in case I got an infection. My husband and the doula stood by me as a kind of labor storm started. I was so scared that I hyperventilated. The doula puffed with me for hours to get my breathing under control. When I went into labor, I screamed throughout the hospital, I was so scared. But an hour later our son was born. He was a totally relaxed kid. He weighed 6.5 pounds, probably because of the stress of pregnancy he was so small.”

Healing experience

As hell as it was the first time, things are going so smoothly now. “I woke up at 4 a.m. with contractions, at 10:30 a.m. my son was born and we were back home at 5 p.m. I was so very happy. I had overcome my fear, let the contractions wash over me and surrendered to them. In the hospital I had felt safe and heard. I knew I was in good hands.”

“My daughter is now sixteen and my son eleven. Everyone is healthy and happy. My son has a special place in our hearts, because we had already given up hope for another child after those miscarriages. By all accounts, his birth was a healing experience. And my kids love each other so much. That takes away a lot of the sadness of the miscarriages.”
