The Volkswagen R division has recently experienced an unprecedented boom. If in the past she was primarily concerned with the Golf R, which from time to time added another model (Scirocco R) has expanded significantly in recent months. And so suddenly there is also T-Roc R, Tiguan R, Touareg R or Arteon R. The renowned Jost Capito was in charge of the development of these innovations. But he is now leaving the position of head of the Volkswagen R.
The British magazine Autocar informed about it, which also claims that there are disagreements with the management of the carmaker behind Capit’s departure. He reportedly had a different view of the future of the Volkswagen R than the head of the entire brand, Ralf Brandstätter. It has to do with is Volkswagen’s departure from the world of motorsport, The Volkswagen R was connected to the Volkswagen Motorsport racing division.
Jost Capito is leaving the German carmaker for the second time in five years. An experienced manager joined Volkswagen in 2012 as the head of motorsport, was behind the then dominance of the brand in the World Rally Championship, which resulted in four victories of the brand between teams and four riding titles for Sebastien Ogier.
In 2016, however, Capito changed employers when he became the head of McLaren Racing. However, he remained in this position for only a few months. That was when the management of the British supercar manufacturer changed when Ron Dennis left. It was he who had hired Capit, and since he was considered his man, he was forced to leave again.
Capito thus returned to Volkswagen in 2017, but this time as head of the Volkswagen R sports division, where he replaced Riestenpatt Richter. He was to oversee the development of erk models, so he oversaw the development of the current model range.
At present, however, the question is what the future of this series will be. Although it has spread considerably, perhaps however, in the case of powerful electric cars, there is talk of using the new GTX designation rather than R. Thus, due to strict emission standards, its further development is largely unknown.
Today, 62-year-old Jost Capito has extensive experience in the world of sports cars. The German manager began his motoring career in 1985 at BMW, where he worked in the M division in the development department of high-performance units. At the end of the eighties, he moved to the Porsche racing division, meanwhile even winning the Dakar with a Mercedes Unimog. He later also worked in the Sauber or in Ford, where he was responsible for the development of the Racing Focus, which twice won the WRC between teams, in 2006 and 2007.
