The day before, officers of the Lithuanian Border Service detained 116 more illegal migrants who were trying to break through from Belarus.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called the influx of migrants to Lithuania across the border with Belarus politically motivated. It is reported by Delphi Saturday, July 3rd.
“We are seeing a certain model, a politically motivated model. The European Commission and the European Union are with you in this difficult period,” she said in Vilnius at a joint press conference with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte.
Ursula von der Leyen pledges more help to Lithuania via Frontex and through the Refugee Bureau.
“With regard to financial assistance, we are considering this issue, for Lithuania there is a total financial assistance from the EU budget – 240 million euros. However, this is a special situation, so we must think about unplanned, urgent funds that can help with this,” Said Ursula von der Leyen.
She stressed that the concerns and problems of Lithuania are the “concerns and problems” of the whole of Europe.
In turn, Nauseda stressed that the Belarusian regime, with the help of migrants, is trying to put pressure not only on Lithuania, but also on the EU.
It also became known that on July 2, on the border with Belarus, officers of the Lithuanian Border Guard Service detained 116 more illegal migrants. The Lithuanian military had to use weapons and tear gas. In just two days, 179 illegal immigrants were detained.
Since the beginning of the year, 938 migrants have already tried to enter Lithuania from Belarus, which is almost 12 times more than in the entire last year. On the eve of the Lithuanian government introduced an emergency situation in the country due to the influx of migrants through Belarus.
Recall that in Lithuania they are discussing construction of a fence on the border with Belarus… Different options are being considered: single fence, double, barbed wire or alarm. At the same time, it will not be possible to install a fence along the entire border due to the natural relief. At the moment, the fence has been installed at 78 km of the border, the length of which is 678.8 km.
