The times of high inflation in Bulgaria have passed, the chairman of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) Assoc. Dr. Atanas Atanasov said in an interview with BTA. His interview is on the occasion of the upcoming European Statistics Day on October 20.
The country clearly follows the trend of falling inflation and even now inflation in Bulgaria is lower than the average for the Eurozone, added the chairman of the NSI and argued with the data on consumer price indices and inflation, published on October 15, 2024, which showed , that in September 2024 the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) in Bulgaria fell to 1.5% on an annual basis, which is the lowest level since March 2021.
The average annual inflation according to the harmonized index of consumer prices – the indicator that is used both by the European Central Bank and the European Commission in comparisons and for the preparation of the Convergent Reports, when we talk about the fulfillment of the price stability criterion, is also decreasing, pointed out Assoc. Dr. Atanas Atanasov.
Although we are not yet a member of the Eurozone, NSI is preparing for the calculation of flash inflation – a first, preliminary assessment of the inflation level, which is published on the last day of the same month to which it refers, the chairman of NSI also announced. He added that 15 to 17 days after the announcement of the flash inflation, within the next month, the current, final data will be published and they will already reflect the receipt of additional information on the dynamics of the price groups in this period.
The full membership of NSI in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) places new commitments in front of national statistics, pointed out Assoc. Dr. Atanas Atanasov. For example – the next population and housing census will have to be done entirely by registers without enumerators. We have a commitment to develop a national statistical program for well-being by 2030 and, together with the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), to collect data on the distribution of wealth, the NSI chairman also said.
