63rd anniversary of Togo’s accession to international sovereignty: The Head of State has rekindled the flame of independence
President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé rekindled the flame of independence on Wednesday April 26, the eve of Independence Day. This ceremony, which sets the tone for the official festivities of the 63e anniversary of Togo’s accession to international sovereignty, took place in the presence of Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, the President of the National Assembly, Yawa Djigbodi-Tsègan, members of the government, representatives of institutions national and international, political parties, as well as various other personalities.
Three highlights marked this evening of emotion and memories for the citizens who, at the cost of countless sacrifices, gave birth to Togo, ” Land of our ancestors “. These include the rekindling of the flame at the stroke of 6:00 p.m., the ringing of the dead and the performance of the national anthem.
Indeed, the rekindling of the flame of independence is a symbolic gesture that perpetuates the republican tradition and recalls the freedom obtained through great struggles by national heroes. It is also a duty of memory towards those who fought for the independence of Togo which has become a reality since April 27, 1960. This highly symbolic act of the President of the Republic also seals the union of the whole nation. Togolese and invites all citizens to stand hand in hand to build a united, prosperous and secure nation.
Following this important ceremony, the Head of State greeted the audience before leaving the scene. Immediately after, the young people, Togolese flag in hand, took over, for a torchlight caravan, to the rhythm of brass bands, crisscrossing the arteries of the city of Lomé. A way for the Togolese to express not only their joy for security and peace in the country, but also to demonstrate their support for the country’s development policy driven by the highest authorities.
