The group did not say who will replace Schäfer, who has been the head of the carmaker since August last year, in the Czech company. He only said that the current VW boss Ralf Brandstätter would take over Volkswagen’s activities in China from August.

Schäfer was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of Škoda Auto in August 2020. At the head of the carmaker, he experienced a difficult period full of outages caused by coronavirus measures or a lack of chips.

Schäfer began his senior management in the automotive industry in Daimler. He has been working for the Volkswagen Group since 2012, where he first held positions in production planning and production capacities abroad. The market in South Africa has been leading since 2015, including the entire sub-Saharan region. He also served as president of the African Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Group Director Herbert Diess, who has recently been under pressure due to disagreements with the group’s influential works council, remains in office. However, he will lose some of his powers, including at the expense of Brandstätter.
