Argentine star Lionel Messi’s contract will expire in two months, but Barcelona president Joan Laporta is convinced that he will stay in the club. Messi spent his entire career in Barcelona, winning 35 trophies with it, including ten titles and four Champions League triumphs. However, due to disagreements with the then head of the club, Josep Maria Bartome, he tried to leave last year and has not yet extended his contract.
Laporta is convinced that after Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Bilbao in the final of the Spanish Cup, to which the six-time holder of the Golden Ball contributed two goals, he will remain in the Catalan club.
“Leo is the best player in the world and he has a very strong bond with the club. I am convinced that he wants to stay and we will do everything for it.” Laport was quoted by Reuters.
“Today he saw that the whole team was behind him and that we were able to play beautiful football,” introduced Laport, who replaced Bartomeu in office after the March elections. Before that, he led Barcelona from 2003 to 2010, when the club won four titles and twice won the Champions League.
