He and Concha belonged to the same starting group. “We quickly lost sight of each other in the water,” said Concha. The first discipline (3.86 kilometers) already cost a lot of grains. “We’re not used to swimming in the sea with the waves.” The two then saw each other again on the racing bike. “That must have been after nine or ten kilometers,” said the 34-year-old engineer. “We chatted a little and talked about swimming.”

The participants were 180.2 kilometers ahead of them. Because of his back problems, Hubbert could not take his usual aerodynamic position. Cycling is his favorite discipline. The wind and the heat bothered everyone. “But it was impressive to see professionals like Jan Frodeno coming towards me on the turning point stretch on the highway,” said Hubbert. “The wind gave me a lot of trouble. Sometimes it came from behind, sometimes from the front, sometimes from the side, ”added Concha.

And then came the final marathon. The aim was to block out the pain in the legs. Concha: “I didn’t run that well either.” Hubbert was happy that after about 30 kilometers he ran into Timo Schaffeld, winner of this year’s Nibelungen Triathlon. “We motivated each other. Timo has also died. But getting out was not an option for us. “

Concha and Hubbert were proud and happy to have stayed under ten hours in their most strenuous competition. “The conditions were really tough. I still enjoyed the show, ”said the Xanten triathlete. Hubbert was probably already thinking about the coming vacation days with his girlfriend Carina Fierek during the Hawaiian Irish novel. With her, the Weseler on Maui recovers from the exertions.
