On Sunday, the Russian Aviation Agency declared a state of emergency at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo International Airport due to a fire. According to the Russian state media Tassi, the Russian aviation authority restricted flight operations for safety reasons.
Baza-media reported that the reason for the flight restrictions was an attempted drone attack on one of St. Petersburg’s businesses. Before the no-fly zone, a drone was shot down in the Leningrad region, the governor of the region Aleksander Drozdenko says.
– The air defense forces destroyed the target near the Vornasuo settlement in the Tusina district. There were no casualties or damage, says Drozdenko.
Vornasuo is located about 50 kilometers from the center of St. Petersburg.
Around the same time, a thousand-square-meter airplane hangar near Pulkovo airport caught fire. According to the Ministry of Emergencies, two people were injured in the fire. According to the Ukrainian news agency Unian, the cause of the fire was an explosion.
A little earlier, also the governor of the neighboring region of Novgorod Andrei Nikitin reported that two drones were shot down in the area. The target of the drone attacks was reportedly an oil company from St. Petersburg.
The fire was later contained and restrictions on Pulkovo airport were lifted.
