The hackers released the FIFA 21 source code, the extortion attempt failed

In the case of CD Projekt and Electronic Arts, of course, it was not an attack by ransomware, but an intrusion into computer systems, from which the attackers downloaded the necessary data. It was an attempt to obtain money using game source data (now FIFA 21), either through a ransom from the contested company or simply by selling it to a third party.

However, CD Projekt and Electronic Arts have simply decided not to negotiate with hackers and let them handle the stolen data as they wish. Previously, the Cyberpunk code 2077 was allegedly sold at auction, or it is basically certain, given that it did not later appear freely accessible as the code to Gwent, or now to the FIFA 21 title. EA, for which they even asked for $ 28 million. Later, they did not even succeed in trying to sell the code to someone else, so they fulfilled their usual threat of publishing it.

It was not just the source code itself, as shown by the fact that a total of 780 GB of data was stolen. This volume probably includes all data related to FIFA 21, ie graphics, sounds, models, etc. According to EA, however, they did not feature any sensitive data concerning the company’s customers, which is why the company immediately refused to pay, stating that it did not expect any impact on its games or overall business. Of course, the police are also investigating the attack and strengthening the security of EA’s servers.
