A teenage hacker named David Colombo claims to have discovered a software vulnerability that allowed him to take control of several Tesla vehicles around the world. He wrote this himself on the social network Twitter.
The young man said he had received “full remote control of more than 20 Tesla cars in ten countries”. According to him, there is no way to become clear the owners of the cars and they can not be informed about the problem.
Tesla neither confirmed nor denied the hacking in front of Bloomberg. But Colombo told the publication that he was in contact with the car manufacturer about the security error.
Colombo was quick to clarify in a subsequent tweet that “This is not a vulnerability in Tesla’s infrastructure. The owners are to blame.” He also claims that he managed to drive one of the cars without a key.
