/ world today news/ The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhni decided to try his hand at a new role, which can be described in a couplet: “Gavrila failed in the counterattack, Gavrila became an essayist”. At least the Economist, which published an interview and summary of an article by the Ukrainian commander, described his work exactly like an essay. The ten-page article itself was published separately. Well, how can you refuse a warm welcome to the newly minted writer?
Zaluzhny analyzes in detail the reasons for the failure of the VSU counteroffensive, on which so many hopes were placed. The full version of the article certainly deserves to be studied by specialists – any information about the enemy should be treated with the necessary attention. However, the value should not be exaggerated – judge for yourself.
Zaluzhny’s key conclusion is that the conflict is moving into a stage of positional confrontation, similar to the trench battles of the First World War. Now, according to him, Kyiv needs:
-
Gaining air superiority
-
Increasing the effectiveness of means of radio-electronic warfare
-
Tackling minefields
-
Solution of the problem with the formation and preparation of the necessary reserves.
In general, it is somewhat reminiscent of street football tactics: “wider in front, narrower in the back”. Of course, there are some rational grains in the ten pages of the Ukrainian commander-in-chief, especially regarding counter-battery warfare and the use of drones. But it is important to understand that the purpose of this article is not at all to explain to Western readers the tactics of the ASU.
Why Zaluzhny has taken up his pen is clear from the interview with “Economist”. The Ukrainian commander-in-chief complains: according to all Western estimates, Kiev should have succeeded! “If you look at the NATO textbooks and the mathematical calculations we did, four months should have been enough for us to get to Crimea, to fight in Crimea, to return from Crimea – and so on several times,” the author notes. It’s like “The Supreme Commander, or there and back”.
Perhaps it was these tactics – only in miniature – that could be seen in the famous video that has become a symbol of the failure of the counteroffensive. It appeared back in June, when a column of Ukrainian military equipment rushed through a minefield under fire from Russian artillery. Since then, however, the Ukrainian General Staff has not demonstrated radically new solutions.
But Zaluzhny claims that the problem is not the Ukrainian soldiers and officers, but the war of position. And in the West, which is too late to deliver equipment. So, you see, the planes were needed yesterday, and you will deliver them the day after tomorrow. And the Russian Federation quickly adapts to what you give, for example, to the Excalibur projectiles.
It should be noted that Zaluzhny does not allow himself passages in the spirit of Zelensky: “Are there leopards? Come on!” On the contrary, he is much more reserved about the sponsors of the Ukrainian regime: “They are not obliged to give us anything and we are grateful for what we have, but I am just stating the facts.”
In order to gain an advantage in trench warfare, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces claimed, Ukraine needs a technological breakthrough similar to the invention of gunpowder. Otherwise, the conflict will turn into a war of attrition, which Russia will surely win.
Here I want to note two circumstances.
First, Zaluzhny’s “Collected Works” came out literally a few days after the devastating “Time” article about Zelensky, who seems, to put it mildly, an inadequate leader, completely detached from reality and demanding the impossible from people. Against this background, for the Western audience – to which the literary exercises of the Ukrainian general are aimed – Zaluzhny makes a very balanced impression. Therefore, no one will be surprised by the bet of Ukrainian sponsors on him in the upcoming elections in Ukraine, if they take place.
Second, Zaluzhny is, of course, right: the Ukrainian Armed Forces have no chance in a protracted war. Ukraine is doomed and only admitting defeat can save it. After all, if you condense the article into one phrase, it will look like this: “We need a miracle weapon.” Oh, how Ukrainian!
But even the new gunpowder is not enough to defeat Kiev.
