Russia is striving to restore relations between Syria and Turkey to their proper nature, after the latter destroyed them by opening its borders to tens of thousands of militants and terrorists and supporting them in fighting the Syrian army on its territory.
In the context, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said, “His country expresses its satisfaction with the decision to involve Iran in the ongoing negotiations, with the participation of Moscow, regarding the normalization of relations between Ankara and Damascus.”
The spokesman added: “We are pleased that Iran will join this process. Iran is an important party. I think they will be able to contribute to this process.”
Kalin stressed that “Iran’s participation in the Russian-mediated negotiation process will make it easier,” and noted that Turkey “is talking within the framework of this process about ensuring the security of its borders, neutralizing the terrorist threat to it, and the dignified and safe return of Syrian refugees to their country.”
Regarding the prospects for the date of the meeting between the Turkish and Syrian foreign ministers, Kalin indicated that it has not been decided at the present time, and he said: “So far, neither the place nor the date has been determined. The foreign ministers are working in this direction. Perhaps it will take place this month, but there is no specific decision.” However, we can expect such a meeting to take place within the next few weeks.”
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a press conference following his talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry that Russia considers it logical for Iran to participate in new contacts regarding a settlement between Turkey and Syria, and a preliminary agreement has been reached on this issue.
