The Guide to the Best High Schools in Lyon: Rankings, Indicators, and Social Context

What are the best high schools in Lyon? By corporatism or in memory of good years, all those who spent their adolescence in the capital of Gaul have their opinion on the subject. But looking at the numbers, the answer is far from simple and definitive. Each year and according to the indicators taken into account by the National Education, the ranking changes and the “best high schools” vary, even if it is true that some regularly stand out.

This article is part of our file The guide to the best high schools in Lyon

On the results of 2022, it is the François Rabelais high school in Dardilly which comes first in the ranking of public general and technological high schools. Alone in its category to display 100% success in the baccalaureate, it is also the one with the fewest candidates, which can give it a small advantage. François Rabelais was already in the lead in 2021.

Le Parc high school, best access rate

It is closely followed by the famous Lycée du Parc (Lyon 6e), which however obtains the best result in terms of student support, with a rate of access from the second to the baccalaureate of 97%. Overall, almost all high schools have an added value to the negative success rate, namely that they have done less well than the objectives of the National Education. This is to measure the difference between the actual success rate and the expected success rate, established each year by the rectorate and the ministry.

The Metropolis of Lyon has 30 public general and technological high schools (LGT), 30 private LGT, 30 public vocational high schools (LP) and 14 private LP. Some establishments offer both general/technological baccalaureates and vocational baccalaureates. They therefore appear in two different classifications. This is the case for seven public high schools and ten private high schools. In total, the metropolis therefore has 104 high schools in 87 establishments.

In the private sector, more than half of high schools have a 100% pass rate. To decide between them, the indicators of added value and the rate of access are therefore decisive. This last criterion corresponds to the way in which the establishments improve, or not, the expected probability that a pupil obtains the baccalaureate at the end of a complete course in high school, since the second.

ORT at the top of private high schools

Thus, the ORT high school (Lyon 8e) is at the top of the ranking, thanks to a high added value in the success rate. Due to lower added values in comparison, the big names in private education in Lyon – Chartreux, Saint-Marc, Minimes, Sainte-Marie, etc. — are a little lower in the ranking. There is a great disparity in numbers in private high schools, with promotions of a few dozen students in some and several hundred in others.

As for vocational high schools, only certain private establishments have a success rate of 100%, the highest rate being 91% in the public sector. Again, a large majority of public high schools add value to the negative pass rate, despite some notable exceptions. Thus, the Cité scolaire René Pellet or the Lycée Frédéric Fays exceeded the expectations of the National Education by ten points. The Cité scolaire René Pellet, at the top of the ranking, is also the establishment with the fewest candidates.

Academic success and social position

For the first time, these high school success indicators can be compared to the social situation of the school’s students. Indeed, the Ministry of National Education published in 2023 the social position indices (IPS) of French schools. This index, created in 2016 but never made public until recently, makes it possible to know whether the family context is more or less favorable to the academic success of young people.

To calculate it, several criteria are used: professions and socio-professional categories of parents, levels of education, cultural practices, etc. The IPS of an establishment corresponds to the average of the indices of the pupils.

Very often, the good results of a high school are correlated with a high GPI. Similarly, private high schools generally have higher GPIs than public high schools, and general high schools mostly have higher GPIs than vocational high schools.

Awards, user guide

To establish its ranking of high schools in the Métropole de Lyon, Grandstand of Lyon takes into account several indicators published by the Ministry of National Education. The first criterion for evaluating high schools is obviously the baccalaureate pass rate; which, however, does not on its own make it possible to evaluate high schools. In fact, when several high schools have the same success rate, how to decide between them?

This is where the added value to the success rate comes into play. These added value indicators reflect the difference between the expected results and the actual results of the establishments. The value added to the success rate therefore represents the difference between the actual success rate and the expected success rate, established by the rectorate and the ministry each year. The higher the added value, the more the school has done better than the set objective. This indicator thus makes it possible to decide between high schools with the same success rate.

Another classification criterion: the rate of access to the baccalaureate since the second. It corresponds to the probability that a new high school student will obtain his diploma after having studied entirely in the same establishment. This percentage illustrates the ability of a school to support its students. The value added to the access rate completes the indicator. Finally, Grandstand of Lyon takes into account the rate of mentions in the baccalaureate in the establishment.

Be careful to observe all the criteria: an establishment placed at the bottom of the ranking because of its success rate may have a higher access rate or added value indicators than those of a higher-ranked establishment.
