“The Guide to Improving Your Mental Health: Tips and Insights from a Cognitive and Behavioral Therapist”

Why Doctor: While according to recent studies, the French, and in particular young adults (18-24 years old), are experiencing a sharp increase in depressive episodes and anxiety, how do you explain this deterioration in mental health and in what can your book help those affected?

There are several explanations: the consequences of the pandemic, the socio-economic context, the difficulty of projecting themselves into the future… Young people today are losing their meaning and really have difficulty imagining their life. future, especially with increasing eco-anxiety. All this creates uncertainty, with a lot of anxiety and depression. Being present on social networks, I realize on a daily basis that young people are suffering and lack the tools to take care of their mental health. And this bookit’s really the one I would have liked to have at this time of life which is complicated, in order to help to understand one’s emotions, to understand oneself, to be in good relation with others, and to ask questions about the values and directions we want to take in life.

“There is no health without mental health”

It is very important to take care of your mental health because there is no health without mental health. And since we were little, we have been taught to take care of our physical health by hydrating ourselves, eating a balanced diet, playing sports… But unfortunately, we don’t really know how to take care of our mental health. .

What are your tips for better managing your emotions?

First: no longer fight against your emotions by trying to suppress them. When we experience an unpleasant emotion, our first instinct is often to want to get away from it. However, an emotion is not an enemy. On the contrary, it has a message for us. It tells us what is important to us, our needs and it gets us moving. So, what you can do to succeed in regulating your emotions, is already to agree to feel the emotion, to name it, to make room for it, to accept it and then to regulate it. And to regulate it, there are plenty of ways, such as relaxation, breathing, cardiac coherence or playing sports for example.

How to improve your mental health on a daily basis?

It is important to identify the thoughts that we can have and that accompany us throughout the day, because some can be a little negative vis-à-vis oneself. “I suck, I won’t make it, I’m not up to it”, for example. Once we become aware of these small thoughts, we can try to activate self-compassion. To do this, you can ask yourself the question: “What would I say to my best friend in the same situation?” Would I say to him: “Yeah, you suck, you’re not going to make it?” I do not think so. With a friend, we would manage to be in goodwill. And yet, vis-à-vis ourselves, we are often our own worst enemy. So, you have to try to become your own best friend.

“Anchor in the present moment, with a new look like an extraterrestrial”

Any last advice?

You have to live in the present. We often tend to anticipate a future that does not exist and which may never exist as we imagine it or ruminate on a past that no longer exists. And it’s a shame because the present passes us by. So the advice I can give is to really try to anchor yourself in the moment, to enjoy every moment. And for that, the first little thing you can do is try to act like an alien, like you just landed on this planet and everything you do is a little bit new.

For example, in the morning, we can take a shower in full consciousness, to better connect to ourselves and to each of our senses. A mindful shower is: listening to the sounds of falling water, watching the little bubbles of water that form, paying attention to the smell of shower gel, the texture of the foam on our skin and be connected to your body in the present moment. Of course, we can’t do this all day, but we must at least try a few seconds here and there, in each of our activities. The advantage of this exercise is that it does not take extra time. You can do it at the same time as lots of things: you can walk in full consciousness, breathe in full consciousness, while having this slightly new look, like the extraterrestrial who discovers life in a different way.
