Ukraine and Poland may shake the position of Gazprom

With the help of their gas transmission systems, Ukraine and Poland can achieve a real market price in the Eastern European market.

The head of the Ukrainian GTS Operator, Serhiy Makogon, believes that Ukraine and Poland have several options for using the gas transportation systems of both countries. Together, they could undermine Gazprom’s dominant position in the European market, especially in Eastern Europe. The corresponding statement on Friday, September 3, announced by the company’s press office.

Makogon noted that one of the possibilities for Ukrainian-Polish cooperation is the storage of gas from the LNG terminal on the shore of the Baltic Sea (Cape Swinoujscie) in the Ukrainian UGS facilities. This could help Poland balance their power grid at peak times.

However, there are other options as well.

“Poland is not only building an LNG terminal, but also the so-called Baltic Pipe, which connects Poland with gas fields in the North Sea. In addition, an interconnector with the Baltic countries has already been built and gas can be received from the LNG terminal in Klaipeda. with Slovakia. Therefore, there are a large number of different options for cooperation between our countries, “- said Makogon.

According to the head of OGTSU, now it is necessary to reconstruct the compressor station and complete the construction of a not very large gas pipeline to Poland, so that technically it would be possible to supply gas from the north of Poland to the south to the border with Ukraine.

According to Makogon, Poland’s ability to receive gas from Norway, the United States, Qatar and other countries will help establish a real market price for blue fuel in Europe.

“This has already been proven by the experience of the Baltic countries. When they built their LNG terminal in Klaipeda, Gazprom was forced to significantly reduce the gas price,” the head of OGTSU recalled.

According to him, the project of such cooperation between Poland and Ukraine does not require large funds, but only the political will of both countries, and that exists today.

Previously Makogon explained why Ukraine will keep transit: due to the gas directive, Gazprom will be able to use only 50% of the capacity of Nord Stream 2.
