The Growing Trend of Working from Home: Survey Reveals Companies’ Shift Towards Remote Work

61 percent of the companies surveyed offer the opportunity to work from home. This is the result of the latest HR manager survey conducted by the ifo Institute in cooperation with Randstad. On average, companies enable their employees to work from home 6.4 days a month, after 6.7 days in the survey a year ago. “Commerce and small businesses in particular are less likely to offer working from home,” says ifo expert Johanna Garnitz.

In retail it is 34 percent of the companies, after 51 a year ago. On average, people work 5.7 days a month in the home office here, compared to 7 days previously. For small companies with up to 49 employees, the figure is 32 percent, down from 46 percent. Here, too, employees are less likely to work from home. On average it is 6.6 days a month, after 7.4 days.

“In large companies and industrial companies, employees can work from home more often and longer than a year ago,” says Garnitz. Almost all companies surveyed with more than 500 employees (94 percent) offer the option of working from home. They allow more days per month than a year ago: on average 7.1 days after 5.3 days. 90 percent of companies that employ between 250 and 499 people enable home office. They approve an average of 6.2 days per month, down from 6 days a year earlier. Two thirds of the companies with 50 to 249 employees offer an average of 5.5 days, after 6.9 days a year ago.
