The Growing Trend of Weapon Ownership in Czech Republic: Record Number of Guns at Home

Czechs have a record number of weapons at home. According to the traders, the most sold weapons are weapons for which a firearms license is not required and it is sufficient if the customer is of legal age and proves his integrity. According to experts, extraordinary events increase the interest in weapons.

In the first half of this year alone, people bought more pistols and rifles than in all of last year. “The increase in the sale of weapons is continuous. A lot of weapons are bought for self-defense, sports shooting and hunting,” said seller Milan Mařík.

Women also became more interested in weapons and firearms licenses. They have steadily made up about 10 percent of the applicants for firearms licenses, this year they are a quarter of the applicants. The acquisition of a firearms license will cost several thousand crowns, and a regular weapon for self-defense will cost approximately 10 to 30 thousand.

“If a person has more than two weapons, they must be stored in a safe, which must meet the parameters of the law. The safe must also be firmly attached to the building, i.e. to the wall or the floor,” Mařík continued.

According to the Home Office, more legally held guns among people do not pose a risk. Their holders are regularly checked for integrity, reliability and health status.

However, a weapon can be obtained even without a firearms license. “These are category D and category C1 weapons, percussion weapons, gas guns and air guns,” Mařík explained.

In the first half of this year, the Ministry of the Interior registered almost 12,500 of these weapons. In six months, this is three and a half thousand more than in the whole of last year, even after the amendment to the law, which mandates their registration with the police within ten working days of purchase .

“Flobertky are bought by people who like that it’s actually a sharp weapon. There are small cartridges, so they can actually shoot, it’s not an air rifle,” Mařík explained.

People are also starting to invest in weapons. “Maybe a Smith & Wesson model 29 revolver. It’s a model that’s been around for quite a while, in .44 Magnum. Clint Eastwood had it in the movie Dirty Harry,” concluded the gun dealer.
