The Growing Social Inequality and Economic Crisis in Lebanon: Insights from Antoine Farah’s Interview with the Lebanese Debate

“Lebanese Debate”

The economist Antoine Farah said, “The great danger in Lebanon currently lies in the social inequality and the widening rift between the 20% who live as they were before the crisis and have good purchasing power, and the crushed 80% whose purchasing power is declining day after day.” And the pressures of life increase.

In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Farah said: “This matter clearly shows the movement of imports. The imports of luxury materials increased during the year 2022 and early 2023, and they need consumers with high purchasing power.”

He added, “The import of basic foodstuffs, which are used by all classes, and the segment of the 80% decreased by a certain percentage, which confirms that the condition of the segment of the 20% is good, and it enjoys purchasing capabilities, in contrast, the segment of the 80% is declining more, and thus the social rift is increasing.”

And he continued, “The segment of the 80% can no longer secure enough to buy foodstuffs, so it goes to rationing the foodstuffs that it consumes, which indicates an expansion of the social rift between the two segments, noting that the armed security and military forces belong to the crushed category.” Therefore, the security man who secures security for the Lebanese society is also unable to live in dignity.

Farah concluded by saying: “We must quickly take measures that secure a minimum level for public sector employees, and for the rest of the oppressed citizens, pending a comprehensive solution.”
