The Growing Security Concerns for Dutch Politicians: A Threat to Democracy

The security package consists of, for example, a special emergency button in the house, an intercom, an alarm system or an anti-burglary door. That is what JA21 party chairman Joost Eerdmans says in Zembla’s broadcast, which can be seen tonight at 8.30 pm.

‘Shockingly high number’

According to the TV program, a quarter of the members of the House of Representatives receive security. “This is a shockingly high number of MPs. If you also add the journalists, lawyers, judges and prosecutors, it means that our democracy is under pressure,” says Minister of Justice Dilan Yesilgöz in the program.

The Public Prosecution Service and the NCTV (National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security) confirm to Zembla that they have instructed Kadaster to protect the data of the MPs because of security risks for the politicians involved.

Leave politics

Several politicians, including D66 member Sigrid Kaag, said this summer that they are leaving politics because of threats.

Last year, a total of 1125 reports of threats and incitement were received against MPs and ministers. That is almost twice as much as the year before.

Wilders

At least half of the 1125 reports came from PVV leader Geert Wilders. Many of the threats he received came from outside the European Union. Many threats came from Pakistan in particular.

Geert Wilders was present this week at a court case about this. The Pakistani Khalid Latif is said to have called for Geert Wilders to be killed in 2018. Wilders used his right to speak, view it here:
