TRONDHEIM (Dagbladet): For many, going for a walk in the park, or to a delicious restaurant with outdoor seating, is one of the best things they know how to do in the summer heat.
But then, out of nowhere, a whole flock of seagulls come plunging towards you, trying to take away the cinnamon bun you just bought.
If you are extremely unlucky, they decide at the same time to do their necessary errand right in your head.
Launches the RBK solution
And it is seagulls that have caused the long-standing county mayor in Trøndelag, Tore O. Sandvik (Ap), to take to Facebook, where he, with a twinkle in his eye, makes a “strong confrontation” with what is perhaps the summer’s biggest source of irritation.
– It is possible that I am wrong, but my definite impression is that the seagull plague is getting worse and worse, writes Sandvik, and says that he himself has worked for 20 years at Torget in the heart of Trondheim.

These days, the Skandia Cup, a large football tournament for children, is being held in Trondheim. The seagulls have not left the people in peace there either, writes Sandvik, who describes that there is constantly “a squadron of increasingly rude seagulls” hanging over the serving and court area.
– The square is sometimes downright difficult to pass, even before they have started to protect their young. They grab food out of the hands of children and adults. They shit everywhere and it can’t possibly be particularly hygienic.

– They appear to many as flying rats. Heavy and uncomfortable. Some say they both steal and lie, writes the outgoing county mayor.

Sandvik further asks whether fines should be introduced for feeding birds on the Square, and believes that someone with “insight and knowledge” should find out what can be done.
– There are certainly natural explanations for this development and there are certainly not very smart dispositions being rushed in various ways from us humans, but if this is to become a livable interaction between people and seagulls in the city, action must be taken.
Dagbladet has been in contact with the climate and environment unit in Trondheim municipality, who say that they receive many inquiries every year during the nesting season. They point out that the Norwegian Environment Agency is the right authority in the event of a request for the removal of nests or the like.
Furthermore, they encourage people to take care to take measures on their property outside the breeding season, as a nest is defined as protected by law. The birds particularly prefer flat roofs when making nests, they say.
