Urban-rural, left-right: the divides in Swiss politics are getting bigger and bigger. Why? And why is there reason for hope? Polarization expert Denise Traber answers.
The election campaign intensified, the tone more hateful. “The Swiss party system is actually very polarized compared to other countries,” says political scientist Denise Traber.

Ms. Traber, you are researching political divides in Switzerland. Is the impression correct that the various political camps in the country are becoming increasingly alienated from each other?
It depends on how you look at it. The Swiss party system is actually very polarized compared to other countries. We have very large parties in the Poles that position themselves firmly on the left or right. But this has been the case since the rise of the SVP in the 1990s. It is also true that the election campaign has become more intense and the tone is sometimes more hateful.
