In neighboring Greece, the number of declared uninhabited homes reached 750,000. At the same time, the issue of housing shortage and the danger of this issue turning into a social crisis has been intensively discussed in recent months.
The number of uninhabited homes in our southern neighbor in percentage terms is the highest in Europe, according to Eurostat data – 35.3%. There are the most available apartments in the big cities. In Athens, the share of vacant homes is 31%, in Thessaloniki – 28.5%, and in Piraeus – 28%.
People who do not have their own home face two problems – the first is high rents, the rate of which is growing faster than wages, and the second – the distance from the workplace.
In most countries, the problem of uninhabited housing is solved by burdening the owners with additional tax burdens. In Greece, however, the approach is reversed – the state helps owners to renovate their properties. However, this approach does not produce the desired results.
