The group that operates the KFC and Pizza Hut brands opens another 10 restaurants in Romania

According to the quoted source, three restaurants will be opened this year, another three next year and four new Pizza Hut restaurants in 2023.

According to the quoted source, Sphera Franchise Group (“Sphera”) reports sales of 444.5 million lei for the first half of the year, representing an increase of 46% compared to the same period last year.

The consolidated sales of the Group in the second quarter registered an increase of 119%, compared to the similar period of last year, reaching 233.1 million lei, being the best quarter in the company’s history.

Sphera Franchise Group also closed the first six months of the year with a net profit of 5.2 million, up 123% from the first half of last year.

Taco Bell Romania restaurants recorded an operating profit of 0.4 million lei in the first half of the year, but general and administrative expenses as well as financial costs led to a net loss of 1.8 million lei.

The performance of KFC Italia continued to be affected by the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions imposed by the Italian authorities. Thus, although in Q2 sales increased by 115% compared to the second quarter of 2020, at the end of the first half of the year, KFC Italia recorded a net loss of 13.5 million lei.

New restaurant concepts

Pizza Hut Romania continued to improve its performance, registering another period of growth from quarter to quarter, but ended the first six months with a loss of 5.6 million lei.

Regarding the development plan of Pizza Hut Romania, following the negotiations with the franchisor Yum !, two new restaurant concepts will be launched on the local market, respectively fast-casual delivery and express.

Also, in the next three years, 10 restaurants will be inaugurated, as follows: 3 locations in 2021, 3 in 2022 and 4 in 2023.

“After a period of instability caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which severely affected the HoReCa industry, this year we see the first signs of stability and recovery. The excellent results recorded in the second quarter give us confidence and optimism in continuing our investments and in the development of our restaurant network.

In this context, we are pleased to announce the launch of new types of Pizza Hut restaurants on the local market: fast-casual delivery and express. Unlike classic Pizza Hut restaurants, the concept of fast-casual delivery offers customers the opportunity to order at home, in the restaurant and to eat there, at the table or elsewhere outside the location, depending on preference.

It is a concept that addresses customers who do not have time for the formal ceremony of a restaurant, who prefer the convenience and speed of being able to enjoy their favorite food anywhere, “said Calin Ionescu, General Manager of Sphera.

Deliveries fell as a result of easing restrictions

In Q2, deliveries through Sphera’s own delivery services, but also through online ordering platforms – Glovo, Food Panda, Takeaway or Tazz – accounted for over 29% of total sales, ie 68.3 million lei.

Compared to T1, the share of delivery orders decreased by 2pp, due to the relaxation of restrictions.

“The second quarter of 2021 brought record sales for us, but despite the increase in turnover we kept track of restaurant and administrative expenses, which grew at a slower pace.

The evolution so far is in line with our expectations, and therefore we maintain our revenue and profit targets for this year. Despite the very difficult 2020, we are satisfied with the accelerated recovery of the business, as well as with the performance of Sphera on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

In this context, we are happy to offer our shareholders, after a short break, a dividend. We are also optimistic about the future liquidity of Sphera shares considering the introduction of Market Maker services this month “, added Valentin Budeş, Sphera’s Chief Financial Officer.

In the first half of this year, Sphera opened 4 restaurants: 2 KFC restaurants in Romania, in Brăila (Drive Thru type) and Sfântu Gheorghe (inside Sepsi Value Center), 1 restaurant in Italy – the first Drive Thru abroad in Pomezia, Lazio region and a Taco Bell restaurant in Iasi.

On June 30, 2021, Sphera operated 161 restaurants with 8 more compared to the same period last year, of which 140 in Romania, 19 in Italy and 2 in the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, Sphera had 4,392 employees, of which 4,058 in Romania, 253 in Italy and 81 in the Republic of Moldova.
