Welcome to the disturbing world of La Femme. For ten years, this enigmatic collective has freed itself from the rules of French song to inject multiple influences, sometimes contradictory.
In this variable-geometry transgender group, it is not always clear who is doing what. Sometimes female voices pop up on one track and fade away on the next.

When you listen to La Femme, you find yourself immersed in a dream … or a nightmare.
It is an odyssey that goes from moments of very positive ecstasy to the most negative nothingness. It’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster.

How do you go about mixing styles that are sometimes very contradictory?
We always work on a lot of songs at the same time. We are inspired by styles that we listen to, but without replicating what has already been done. Suddenly, we make collages, hybrids.
You are difficult to classify. Spotify will have a hard time fitting you into its playlists.
The good side of things is that we eat at all the racks: electro, psyche, French song, rock… It’s quite broad. We love underground groups like the big hits. We are in between. We are “big” in the small and vice versa. Take a song like Le Sud, by Nino Ferrer. It’s variety, a huge hit, but nobody can say it’s a bad song.

How to avoid dispersing?
We are very messy, it goes all over the place. But after a while, consistency does emerge.
The identity of La Femme is a bit hazy …
We don’t want to put someone too much forward. We try not to fall for the old clichés of rock bands.

Why did you invite Clara Luciani on your album?
It is not to make a big blow. She was part of the group, we’ve known her for a long time.
The album is very sensual while we live in an era where contact is discouraged. Have you been inspired by the pandemic?
Everything was ready before. The coronavirus, we did not see it coming, like everyone else. But it is true that certain words have taken on a different echo since the start of the pandemic. It’s a coincidence.

“Foutre le bordel” is the title of one of your songs. Is this also your program?
Why not ? The idea is launched. People are breaking down. The French are a rather rebellious people, and that’s good. Otherwise, we just have to shrivel up and become robots.

Does the news have its place in the songs of La Femme?
When we are on tour, we are completely disconnected from what is happening “in real life”, we do not watch the news. I’m interested in current affairs, but our music is a way of taking refuge in our world. We live next to reality, we have created our own bubble.
