The University of Zaragoza has hosted a face-to-face meeting of the Sectoral Commission for International Relations of the Group 9 of Universities. In these sessions, which took place on the afternoon of January 24 and the morning of the following day, January 25, various issues related to the international projection of the G-9 of Universities were discussed.
Among them, the participation of the different members of Group 9 in the European Universities Initiative has been addressed; care for refugees from Afghanistan; the complex scenario that opens up in relations with British universities after the consummation of Brexit (definitively from 2023); relations with Russian universities, presented by the education attaché of the Spanish Embassy in Moscow, Javier Torres; the possibilities of internationalization that open up with online training through the G9 Digital Campus and the reactivation of relations with the prestigious Hispanic American College of Cali, according to a press release from the UCLM published on its website.
rural mobility
The University of Zaragoza shared with the members of the G9, as an example of innovative experience and good practice, its rural mobility programs that, since the summer of 2021, have also been opened to European students as a tool to promote the development of the rural environment and offering new job opportunities, as well as intercultural experiences. Likewise, the decision has been made that the Development Cooperation Working Group be coordinated by the University of Oviedo.
In this session of the Sectoral Commission for International Relations of Group 9, in addition to the rector of the University of Cantabria, Ángel Pazos, who chaired the conference, the vice-rector for Internationalization and Global Commitment of the University of Cantabria, Matxalen Llosa; the vice-rector for Internationalization of the University of Oviedo, Jesús Daniel Santos; the vice-rector for Research and Internationalization of the University of La Rioja, Eduardo Fonseca; the vice-rector for Internationalization of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Raúl Martín; the vice-rector for Internationalization and Cooperation of the Public University of Navarra, Jorge Elso; the vice-rector for Euskera, Culture and Internationalization of the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, Maria Juncal Gutierrez, together with the director of International Mobility of the same university, Bryan Leferman, and on behalf of the University of Zaragoza, the vice-rector for Internationalization and Cooperation of the University of Zaragoza, Francisco Beltrán, together with the director of the Internationalization Secretariat, María Villarroya, and the director of the Development Cooperation Chair, Sergio Salinas.
On behalf of the Group 9 of Universities, the Projects and Activities manager, Cristina Leuza, has attended, and Marcos Nadal, vice-rector for Strategic Planning, Internationalization and Cooperation, and Ricardo J. have participated electronically on behalf of the University of the Balearic Islands. Sagrera, head of the International Relations Service; and on behalf of the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, Estibaliz Martínez, technician from the Development Cooperation Office.
The rector of the Colegio Hispanoamericano de Cali, Hugo de Jesús Botero, has also been invited to attend this conference online; the Education Attaché of the Spanish Embassy in Moscow, Javier Torres; and the director of the G-9 Shared Digital Campus, David Benito.
Group 9 of Universities
To conclude, the UCLM includes in its note that the Group 9 of Universities (G-9) is an association made up of public universities that are unique in their respective autonomous communities: University of Cantabria, University of Castilla-La Mancha, University of Extremadura, University of the Balearic Islands, University of La Rioja, University of Oviedo, University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, Public University of Navarra and University of Zaragoza.
The purpose of the association is to strengthen relations between the university institutions belonging to the group, in order to promote, among others, collaboration in teaching and research activities of its university community. The G-9 universities have 170,000 students, 19,340 members of the Teaching and Research staff and 8,160 members of the Administration and Services staff.
