The ground operation in Gaza will be bloody and complicated, Raimonds Graube, the former commander of the National Armed Forces (NBS), stated in the Latvian Television program “Today’s Question”.
He called for separating the invasion of the Gaza Strip from the invasion of Gaza City, because it is there that has the greatest support point for the Palestinian militant group “Hamas”.
The former NBS commander explained that such an operation was carried out in 2014, when the “Hamas” structure was partially destroyed. According to Graube, Hamas has drawn conclusions from this, as have the Israeli armed forces.
“Military forces have increased. This shows that the operation will be very bloody and difficult. People have nowhere to stay. A land operation in the city, between houses will demand victims of the population. The operation will be tragic,” said the former NBS commander.
In response to the question of how what is happening could affect European political and public opinion, Jānis Sārts, head of NATO’s Center of Excellence for Strategic Communication, emphasized that Israel’s response to Hamas attacks is guided by political logic, which is aimed at the emotional state currently in Israel, for good reason this situation is compared to the terrorist attacks of September 11 in the USA.
“Military action will be very strong. I assume that in the eyes of many it might seem disproportionate. I think it could raise the question of whether or not other Arab countries can get involved in this conflict. I assume that Iran, which certainly participated in the creation of the plans, wanted to achieve goals – to destroy peace processes in the Middle East,” Sarts said.
In his opinion, it will be difficult for Europe, but it should be understood that already the most Palestinians are turning to Muslims in Europe. This will also mean an increase in tension, especially in certain regions of Europe, where the situation is also not very stable.
LETA already wrote that in response to the attack of the Palestinian Islamist group “Hamas”, Israel has been bombarding the Gaza Strip for the sixth day, which it has completely besieged, denying it the supply of electricity, water, food and medicine.
Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, the worst in Israel’s 75-year history, killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and injured around 3,000.
