A tall order awaits the cities as they must battle the looming wasteland between them. As classic retail is under pressure, new ideas are needed. Offenbach relies on creative people.

AWhen Britta Zubrod-Nikisch told her circle of acquaintances and friends that she was planning to found a second company next to her physiotherapy practice, she was met with a lot of incomprehension. Now you’re 65, you’re no longer starting a business, you can’t wait to retire, she said. But Zubrod-Nikisch could not be slowed down. Because the shop he dreamed of was a matter of the heart for her. In May, the time had come. In the Senefelder district, south of the main railway station, you have opened: Offenbach first unpacked shop.

The shop in the Gründerzeit building is chic and cozy at the same time. Sunlight comes in through the large windows, there’s an elegant coffee maker and trays full of sweets on the counter, there’s lots of wood and white in Zubrod-Nikisch’s shop. A group of mothers has just arrived, who are stripping their children of their winter clothes on the café tables. In the back rooms there is the unpacked goods. Muesli in particular is bought a lot, others come to fill the containers they brought with them with dish soap or shampoo, says the entrepreneur. In one corner are cute decorative items made entirely from recycled paper.
