According to diplomatic sources, a Greek policeman, a member of the consul’s guard in Jerusalem, was temporarily detained on Holy Saturday (4/5).
It was preceded by an episode that occurred during the Ceremony of Touching the Holy Light in the Church of the Resurrection. The Greek policeman was released after the intervention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is investigating the circumstances under which the incident took place and will take all necessary actions.
SYRIZA asked for explanations
SYRIZA issued a statement on the incident requesting “the immediate provision of clarifications from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”. Koumoundourou described the incident as “unprecedented”.
“We call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs to immediately inform the National Delegation and we await the Greek government’s reaction to the Israeli side, commensurate with the seriousness of the incident,” concluded the official opposition.
