Restoration of the Collapsed Great Wall
After a strong earthquake, the authorities organized an inspection of local cultural relics and found the site collapsed. The main protection has been installed and repair and restoration work is in progress.
9 People Injured
The quake hit a sparsely populated area but several large cities felt the tremors. There were no reports of deaths but nine people were injured, of whom eight were discharged from hospital and one is still under surveillance.
The head of the Gansu Earthquake Agency, Shi Yucheng, said the nearest residential area was 40 kilometers from the epicenter, which is in the earthquake belt and local residents are used to dealing with earthquakes.
In the local battle against poverty, people’s homes are upgraded or refurbished to be earthquake resistant, which also contributes to reducing casualties in earthquakes of such magnitude, Shi said.
On April 14, 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai, leaving 2,698 people dead and 270 missing. More than 90 percent of the homes of local residents collapsed as a result of the quake and several strong aftershocks.
