/ world today news/ At the age of 94, the great Bulgarian poet, screenwriter, playwright and translator Academician Valeri Petrov died.

The great Bulgarian poet was admitted to the VMA-Sofia on August 22 after suffering a stroke and was in a coma for several days. Doctors took care of him around the clock in the intensive care unit.

Valery Petrov has always been not only a talented artist, but also a remarkable citizen. He was born with the name Valeri Nisim Mevorah, and Valeri Petrov is his pseudonym. He is a Bulgarian poet, screenwriter, playwright and translator of Jewish origin, known for his translations of William Shakespeare into Bulgarian.

Together with Hristo Ganev, Angel Wagenstein and the long-deceased theater expert Gocho Gochev refused to denounce Solzhenitsyn and Boris Pasternak at a meeting of the SBP. He is the author of wonderful poems, including one dedicated to Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in Prague in 1968. Screenwriter of some of the most notable Bulgarian films.

Valery Petrov was born on April 22, 1920 in the family of Maria Petrova, a teacher of French in the capital’s high schools, and Dr. Nisim Mevorah, professor of legal sciences, specialist in family law, prominent lawyer, public figure, diplomat – ambassador to USA, representative of Bulgaria in the UN.

At the age of 15, Valeri Petrov published his first independent book – the poem “Birds to the North”, poems were published in 1936 in the magazine “Uchenicheski podem”, and in 1938 his first book “Birds to the North” was published under a pseudonym Asen Rakovski. Later he wrote the poems: “Palechko”, “On the road”, “Juvenes dum sumus”, “By the blue sea”, “Attic memory” and the poem cycle “Tendernesses”.

In 1944 he graduated in medicine at the University of Sofia, and for some time worked as a doctor, in the fall and winter of 1944 he worked at Radio “Sofia”, then participated in the second phase of the war against Nazi Germany as a military writer in the editorial office of the newspaper ” Frontovac”. After the war, he was one of the founders and deputy editor-in-chief of the Sturshel newspaper (1945-1962). He served as a doctor in a military hospital and in the Rila Monastery.

From 1947 to 1950, he worked in the Bulgarian legation in Rome as an attaché for press and culture. During these years he traveled to America, Switzerland, France as a delegate to various forums. Later, returning to Bulgaria, he was an editor at the “Boyana” Feature Film Studio, editor of the “Bulgarian Writer” publishing house and a People’s Representative in the Seventh Supreme Court (1990-1991).

Valeri Petrov has been an academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 2003, he was included in the list of honor of the International Council for Children’s Books because of Five Tales, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize.
