The great drought has passed, and it will be even wetter in the coming days

The precipitation deficit is the difference between how much water evaporates and how much rain falls. By mid-May, the precipitation deficit is normally around 40 millimeters, but currently only 23 millimeters.

The groundwater level is currently normal in Limburg and Brabant. According to Thomas Vermeulen from Rain radar it is even higher than normal in some places in the Achterhoek.

World of difference

Vermeulen speaks of ‘a world of difference’ compared to the spring of last year. “Last year we had a very dry and warm spring. Then the precipitation deficit quickly increased.”

It was also very dry in the years before. The summer was particularly dry in 2018. Then the deficit went up sharply from June onwards, can be seen in this graph of the KNMI.

So this spring it is all not too bad. And that will not change in the coming days either. Because the sun does not show much, and the temperatures are quite low for the time of year, little water evaporates. And so the deficit remains low.

Keep showers

According to Vermeulen, we are not getting rid of the showers yet. “From the southwest, an area with rain showers enters our country this afternoon. In the northeast there is a chance of hail and thunderstorms.”

That is also the weather forecast for tomorrow and Monday. After that it becomes a bit quieter, but not yet a ‘stable’ spring weather. “The temperature during the day is around 15 degrees. So there is no question of nice spring weather for the time being.”

It is raining here now
