NEW YORK – New York City Concert Series closes in Central Park on Saturday amid the concern of the effects of Hurricane Henri that would be reaching the tri-state area.
De Blasio tweeted in the early hours of Saturday afternoon that “we do not expect the weather to have a major impact” at the Saturday night concert in Central Park. The mayor confirmed Saturday afternoon that the concert would take place and asked attendees to go home as soon as it was over.
As of now, we don’t expect the weather to have a major impact on tonight’s concert in Central Park and the show will continue!
The Central Park concert, which started at 5:00 pm, is the end of the week the city is coming home to celebrate its ongoing recovery from the pandemic. The “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert “culminates a week full of concerts in every county.
At this point, the Time Authority expects Henri’s first hits to come after midnight. Ultimately, up to 6 inches of rain could fall in parts of northern Queens and the Bronx by the time the system moves, the mayor said. Long Island is expected to be hit directly. The city is now out of the cone of concern, but a State of Emergency has been declared for the Big Apple.
The concert series meant to celebrate the city’s progress on the COVID-19 pandemic has been performed to vaccinated crowds since Monday. The concerts were conceived as a kind of “New York is back” message to the world, and some of the city’s favorite icons have performed.
Tickets have been free to the general public, but are sold out before Saturday’s concert. VIP tickets are for sale, but they cost several hundred dollars, at the cheapest price.
Ticket holders had to provide proof of the COVID-19 vaccine to enter, but the city said wearing the masks will be optional as the event is outdoors.
