The Gray Bees by Andrei Kurkov: Culturo’Café Monthly Meeting on War Stories and Award-Winning Book

Launched a few weeks ago, Culturo’Café is a monthly meeting where participants can discuss various subjects such as literature, cinema, thematic debate…. The idea is to create a welcoming environment where everyone can share your passions, your cultural discoveries, and learn from other participants. The next session will take place on Tuesday January 16 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will have the theme “War Stories”. A session led by Jacqueline Robert who will present “The gray bees”, by Andreï Kourkov.

Who is Andrei Kurkov?

Andreï Kurkov is a Ukrainian writer of Russian mother tongue, born in 1961 in Budogoshch (Leningrad Oblast). He spent his younger years in the then Soviet city of kyiv and still lives there. He worked in various professions as an editor, prison guard and cameraman. His novels are characterized by a sharp and ironic look at life in post-Soviet societies. There we find a number of obscure situations from Russian or Ukrainian daily life which, distorted to the extreme, become surreal. Kourkov always takes a serious and tender look at his characters. He often uses the register of the animal fable (see “The Penguin”, “The Chameleon” Trout à la Slav”) which allows him to depict with humor the political and social life of the post-Soviet years.

In a small abandoned village in the “gray zone”, stuck between the Ukrainian army and pro-Russian separatists, live two people left behind: Sergeitch and Pashka. Now the only inhabitants of this no man’s land, these childhood enemies are forced to cooperate in order not to sink. To the rudimentary living conditions is added the monotony of winter days, animated, for Sergeitch, with visionary dreams and memories. A dedicated beekeeper, he believes in the beneficial power of his bees which once attracted customers from far and wide. When spring comes, Sergeitch decides to find a quieter place for them. Having loaded his six hives onto the trailer of his old Tchetviorka, he sets off on an adventure. But even in the middle of the gentle flowery meadows of western Ukraine and the silence of the Crimean mountains, the eye of Moscow remains wide open…For more information on Culturo’Café and the other programs offered by the Media Library, interested parties can visit the website:
