The grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth watch over the coffin

On Saturday evening, Queen Elizabeth’s eight grandchildren watched over her grandmother. For fifteen minutes they stood by the coffin in Westminster Hall as the audience walked in and out of the hall to greet the Queen one last time.

The vigil started at 19:00 Dutch time. Prince William led the group to the coffin, followed by Prince Harry, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Lady Louise and James, Viscount of Severn. Zara Tindall and Peter Philips were the last to enter the room.

William and Harry, both dressed in military uniforms, stood at the head and foot of the coffin. The other grandchildren, all in black, sat on the corners and sides.

Like Elizabeth’s four children, who watched over her on Friday night, the grandchildren looked down for a full quarter of an hour. Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the parents of Louise and James, watched from afar.

It was a special moment for Prince Harry. As he is no longer an active member of the British royal family, he has lost his honorary titles and is normally no longer allowed to wear his military uniform. King Charles made an exception for the wake. Previously he had done the same for his brother, Prince Andrew.
