In recent months, there have been rumors that Rockstar is working on remastered versions of the first three 3D games in the Grand Theft Auto series, and now reports Kotaku that sources within the company confirm that the new versions are real and will be released at the turn of the year.
The games in question are Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas, the three games that were first released for Playstation 2 and Xbox and later also Windows and Mac.
According to Kotaku, Rockstar uses Unreal Engine and a mix of original and new graphics. No major changes to the games are planned, but they should be as close to the originals as possible but run on modern consoles. The launch is said to include almost all platforms except Mac.
The games are mainly developed by Rockstar Dundee, a satellite studio in the small Scottish town north of Edinburgh where Rockstar North is headquartered. The studio was bought by Rockstar / Take Two last year and was previously called Ruffian.
