The «Grand Prix» of the «Artdocfest/Riga» festival receives the films «Manifest» and «Apolonia, Apollonia»

The jury of the “Artdocfest Open” program – theater and cinema actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite, editor-in-chief and director of the “Rīgas Laiks” magazine Uldis Tirons, writer and publicist Dmitrijs Gluhovskis – this year awarded the “Grand Prix” to Anji Vincito’s film “Manifesto” for “extraordinary power with some the birth of evil is shown and the hopelessness with which the unknown generation resists it.”

The jury awarded the “Best Director” award to Saša Kulaka for the film “A Hawk the Size of a Horse” for “an open and deliberate way of working as a director, creating a film in previously unknown psychological territory.”

The “Special Award” goes to Simon Lerang Wilmont for House of Rubble for “a story full of amazing characters in whose lives we see the bright and the tragic at the same time. This is a beautifully crafted story that brings out the details precisely and evokes emotion.”

This year, the jury gave special recognition to two artists. To the director Marusja Siroječkovska – for the film “How to save a dead friend” about “young people’s search for intimacy, love and meaning in a common life. The film is more of a confession made with great concern for people and poetics.

For the Ukrainian director Alisa Kovalenko – for the film “We will not disappear”, which is a story highlighted by the director about “dreams and dreamers. This is a story in which life and a person are brought to the fore.” This is the story of young people in Eastern Ukraine, whose life and dream of a trip to the Himalayas intersected with war and war experiences from the point of view of young people.

The jury of the “Baltic Focus” program – Polish documentary film director, cameraman and producer Pavel Lozinskis, co-founder of the Ukrainian Film Academy and member of the European Film Academy Yuliya Sinkevicha, documentary film director Ilze Burkovska-Jakobsen – awarded the “Grand Prix” to Lea Globa’s film “Apollonia, Apollonia ” for “a beautiful and touching double portrait of two young artists. This is a film that examines the struggle with growing up, art and femininity, renewing our faith in friendship and freedom.”

The jury recognized director Eināris Pākanen’s documentary film “Karaoke Paradise” as the “Best Film”, highlighting the director’s revelation that “there is a little diva in each of us”.

The jury awarded the “Best Director” award to Maks Golomdidov for the direction of the film “Yoga”, highlighting the director’s ability to “patiently observe the diverse wonders of the world and observe them in the space of a closed park.”

On Thursday, March 9, the audience will have the opportunity to attend screenings of award-winning films at the “Splendid Palace” movie theater.

This year, the International Documentary Film Festival took place from March 2 to 9. In two competitions – “Baltic Focus” and “Artdocfest Open” – and two out-of-competition programs – “ArtDoc&ProArt” and “War before war” – almost 50 documentaries were offered to the audience, which looked at the most current trends and themes of documentary cinema during the war.

The international documentary film festival “Artdocfest/Riga” is supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund, the National Cinema Center and several international funds.
