The governor of the state of Oklahoma signs the strictest abortion ban law in the US.

The legislation prohibits all abortions after the moment of conception, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.

The governor of the state of Oklahoma, Republican Kevin Stitt, signed on Wednesday a law on the strictest abortion ban in the US, inform local media.

The ley forbids all abortions after the moment of conception, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Thus, the legislation prohibits any procedure that “causes the death of an unborn child,” which is defined as a “human fetus or embryo at any stage of gestation, from fertilization to birth.”

“I promised Oklahomans that as governor I would sign every pro-life law that comes my way, and I’m proud to keep that promise today,” Stitt said.

For its part, the Center for Reproductive Rights ad which, together with the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), will present a lawsuit to block the law.

“We will not stop fighting for the people of Oklahoma and across the country. We all deserve the freedom to control our own bodies and lives,” said center president Nancy Northup.

“At a time when communities are facing senseless tragedies and immeasurable pain, politicians have chosen to use their position and power to instill more fear, while taking away people’s right to decide what it’s better for your own body, your life and your future at all times,” said PPFA President Alexis McGill Johnson.

The state of Oklahoma already banned all abortions after reaching around six weeks’ gestation in early May, when Stitt signed SB 1503. This legislation also allows private citizens to sue for up to $10,000 whoever provides pregnancy termination services or who helps a woman have an abortion.

Also, last September a law came into force in Texas that prohibits abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The ban has no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, only for cases of medical emergencies.
